Careful What You Wish For!

Green Market Stall

Greetings to everyone who has stopped by today. I hope that you are all doing well and are in the holiday spirit, whatever holiday it is that you celebrate this time of year.

Holiday

I will give you an update on my Green Market experience since I have been able to set up there for a couple of months now. I would like to preface this update by letting you know that this has been my personal experience with everything that is going on in my own life and trying to fit things into my schedule. Every vendor will have their own experience and I acknowledge that.

Personally, I thoroughly enjoy setting up my stall and being able to put my sewing on display to sell. I find it therapeutic to be able to talk to the people who come to peruse my items and purchase them. They express their opinions of my work and I can explain my process and experience to them. I have told the market manager that it is the best money I have ever spent on therapy!

That being said, I do want to explain the title of this post. Before I decided to become a vendor and start selling my things in the market, I had amassed an enormous amount of items that I had already sewn. Things that I put my time and effort into perfecting as a way to pass time and to learn as I was home taking care of the things that needed my attention there for a few years. The sheer number of items I had sewn was quite large! Thanks to the encouragement of a few friends and family members who had been witness to the many years of accumulating items, I decided to go for it.

Green Market

Now, after selling for a few months, I find that I have sold a large number of the stock-piled items, and it has been extremely fun being there and having the experiences I have had. However, things in my life have not changed enough to allow me the time that I need to keep up with the sheer demand for my sewing weekly to be able to set up every week. So, where I had time and plenty of things to sell at first, now I have way less time and way fewer items to sell every week.

I have come to the realization that I can not meet the demand for my hand-sewn items on a weekly basis. Where I originally wished for a lot of attention and customers, I got exactly what I wished for! I get phone calls for sewing as well as folks who just bring things by the stall to drop off. I get so much that I have to turn away custom work because I have no time to do it. I had originally thought I would be lucky if I made any sales, and soon found out it is far more work and takes far more time than I have.

Green Market

I am realizing that I can not earn enough money with the sewing that I sell at the Green Market to be able to make a living with it. I am sure many of the vendors are in similar situations. This would be why the hand-crafted items at these markets are so sought after. The vendors have little time to create them and are doing it as a hobby. Sadly, this is where it is going to end up for me as well.

I am not saying that I am going to STOP selling at the Green Market altogether. But I am only going to do it when I have enough items to warrant setting up to do so. It is looking like I may be following through with a MONTHLY setup rather than weekly. If you need further details as to why, I will happily share them in a follow-up post. It has been difficult for me to come to this realization and I have 2 more weekends to get through for the year before I realign myself for the 2024 year ahead.

Thank you for reading to this point. I will continue to post the items that I make in the gallery. If you see something that you are interested in, feel free to reach out to me through Facebook or E-mail.

There will be another post within the next 2 weeks. I look forward to this holiday season and I hope you enjoy yours as well. Thanks! ~ Penelope

Green Market

This week will be the fourth week I will be selling at the Green Market near me. I was so stoked when I was approved to be able to sell there. I always enjoy the folks there and have had it in my mind for a long time that I would like to try it. I was so pleased that my sewn items have been well received by the patrons of the market.

It was nice that several of the vendors at the market came by and gave me tips on how to improve my setup and make it a lot easier on myself. Originally I had a couple of huge wire racks that I had to drag out and set up, but they took up way too much room. They also made it next to impossible to see into the tent to see what I had for sale.

And let’s not even talk about how heavy they were! I had to have my husband come to put them up and move them around. Now I have a simple setup. I just hang shower or curtain rods from the tent and hang all the bags from those. It is really so much easier!

Of all the sales that I have made over the past few weeks, the most popular item, by far, is the cellphone bags. We are located within walking distance of the beach, and everyone with a phone can use a bag to put their phone in while they take a walk on the beach. I make so many different styles of cell bags that it is easy for anyone to find one they like. After the second week, I started getting phone calls asking for more styles that are senior citizen-friendly so the folks can get the phone out easily. I have started adapting them a bit to help them out. Overall though, they are just popular.

I look forward to this week at the market because the weather is finally turning and it is supposed to be cooler. The one thing that prevents me from selling in the summer is the heat here in Florida. I can not stand how hot it gets and I will not subject myself to the torture of standing or sitting outside when it’s almost 100 degrees!

I absolutely love where I live, however, I am getting older and do not like feeling the heat in summer. Next year I am going to start taking the show on the road. I plan to take my selling up North to the upper half of the US to sell at a few Green Markets up there.

I have already obtained the licenses and insurance needed to do so. I can hardly wait for May to get here!

Well, I am going to close this post. Thank you for stopping in to read about my adventures. I will post more again soon. Have a great day wherever you are.

Top 5 Sewing Notions I Can’t Do Without!

Every seamstress or “sewist” who has been sewing for any length of time has developed their own style and discovered their own favorite tools along the way. Over the years I have found many tools that I use on a daily basis in my sewing that are too important for me not to share them! This list is my all-time top 5! Though there are far more than 5 on my list, these are the tippy top 5 that I can not, or will not, do without!

#1) That Purple Thang!

I know you have probably seen this tool on many a sewist’s top 5 list, and that is because it is simply the best tool available to do the job! I use my Purple Thang for several important things. First of all, I always use this tool to hold fabric or zippers in place as they are starting to pass under the sewing machine needle. I NEVER, ever, use my fingers to push fabric or anything under that needle while it is moving! This little guy has a slight curve to it and makes it super easy to manage layers as the feed dogs pull the fabric into place! Though some folks prefer an awl, I like this tool because I have had the needle hit it (not a good thing!) and not break it! I am not afraid to mention that I did start using this tool after watching someone accidentally get their finger caught by the needle.

2.) Gingher Sewing Shears!

I am sure that everyone has their own favorite brand of sewing scissors. I do as well, I have owned several pairs over the many years that I have been sewing, but of all of them, the only ones that I still use and trust are my Gingher Sewing Shears! I have had FIskers that lasted me for years only to have my kids get their hands on them and ruin them by cutting all manner of things. I will usually hide my shears now or even put a padlock on the handles so even my dear husband can’t get ahold of them. They are the life blood of my sewing!

3.) Sewing Machine Light!

I am an average American. I still have kids living at home, so there isn’t a secluded and specific space for my sewing as of yet. That being said when I do get the time to sew, sometimes it’s well after dark or in the very early mornings. Unfortunately, I find it is too dark to see what I am trying to sew if I don’t add additional lights to my sewing area. When I found this sewing machine light that adheres directly to the machine, I was overjoyed! Now I can sew at any time and always be able to see exactly what I am sewing! After using it for several years, I have found that I do also use it during the day just to make sure I can see under the machine regardless of the lighting situation.

4.) Fiskars Snips!

I found these smallish snips that were made by FIskers at Joann’s one day. I bought them to give them a try so that I could stop having to pick up the big scissors every time a single thread needed cut on my sewing. Little did I know that I was going to fall in love with them! Now I can’t sew without them! I have bought extra pairs so that I can take them with me wherever I go! You need these! They don’t require your entire hand to operate, and they are very gentle on the arthritic hands! I use them all day while sewing.

5.) The last item on the list is actually two items that work together! Fiskars Rotary Cutter and an Aluminum Ruler!

I find it super easy to be able to cut pattern pieces using a rotary cutter. I find that my hands aren’t steady enough to cut a straight line by myself often. So, I have gotten an aluminum ruler that I use as a straight edge for cutting with. When I use the two of them together I can always cut out pattern pieces quickly and they are always on point! I will never be without them now. They are worth their weight in gold! I promise you this is the best way to trim anything straight!

Well, there you have it, my top 5 favorite sewing notions. I do have several more that I use every single day that I sew. However, I will save those for another day.

Feel free to pop over to the sewing gallery to see some of the many things that I have sewn over the years. I try to post as many images of the items I have made as possible. Until next time, have a great day!

Waiting to Hear Back

Although I had previously submitted my request to be a vendor at the local green market, due to family constraints I have never been able to follow through. I have submitted another application in hopes that I can get a spot to go sell some of the thousands of things I have sewn over the years.

I am excited at the potential to sell some of these items so they can be used by people who want them. Furthermore, I am equally excited to be able to be out in public meeting people who are like-minded and trying to make a difference in our environment by keeping it green!

More Than zipper bags!

I have sewn cosmetics bags, pencil cases, inhaler bags, epi-pen bags, and any kind of zipper bag that exists. Anyone who knows me probably has at least one bag that I have made.

But I sew so much more than zippy bags. If it is a quick sew, is super useful, or looks cute, I will try to make it. If I can’t find a pattern, I can usually make my own without much trouble.

So, what do I offer that might be useable at the green market? Well, let me share!

I often frequent the many thrift shops here in my town. I usually look for items that are not selling, are discounted to be cleared, or they are going to be tossed. I take those items and turn them into useful items like reusable shopping bags, tote bags, BOHO crossbody bags, beach bags, or the like. It prevents the items from going to the landfill and gives them an opportunity to be useful again.

Update Soon…

I hope to hear by the end of this next week if I will be allowed to sell.

I have gotten all my ducks in a row… insurance, tent, and tent weights, tables, signs, you name it, I have it ready to go! I am ready to make this happen!

I spoke to the gal who runs the market south of me and she said I should hear by this next Thursday. We shall see if I will be getting up early on Saturdays for a while. Fingers Crossed!

Latest Obsession!

Koi Bag

As of late, I have been nursing a back injury that has taken me off my feet. I can sit for short periods of time and lie down for a while, but there isn’t any length of time I am without pain. I figure since I will be in pain, I might as well bury myself in a project! The latest obsession is Koi Bags!

More Koi Bags

I saw a video on YouTube of someone making a fish bag and it sent my brain into overdrive! I had to make a koi bag! So I dug in and started figuring it out! Here are a few images of the goings-on! Enjoy!

The original one has a ribbon tie that I wrapped around the top of the bag. Then it came to me… Drawstring bags! So I made the second and third with grommets to make them like drawstring bags! I also switched up the body fabrics to make them unique since all koi are unique. I can’t wait until I can show them off to my friends here in town!

For the Record!

Welcome to the blog. This is me tracking my designs and inspiration!

If you know me, then you know that I have spent over a decade creating one blog after another documenting the myriad of things that clutter my brain on any given day. Above all of these things, one thing has remained a constant for me. Designing and sewing my own creations. Until this blog, I had not accurately documented my efforts. I hope to share my design journey with the world in an effort to inspire others to follow their creative dreams.

On with the show!

Scottie Sweater Crossbody Bag

This little Scotty bag was crafted from an old sweater that I would never wear. As a bag, she carried it everywhere!
